‘Umbráfila’ by Paulina Meza
2024
This special edition of the iconic Mezcal Ultramundo bottle is made a reality by the hand of the Mexican designer and goldsmith Paulina Meza. The three-dimensional intervention is made out of repurposed sterling silver, representing a landscape of desert mountains dazzled by the most important celestial event of the next 200 years, the Annular Solar Eclipse 2024, which occurred on April 8 of the aforementioned year. This collaboration between Paulina Meza and Mezcal Ultramundo takes on even greater luster as the region of Zona del Silencio and La Laguna is known as part of the totality trajectory of this great celestial event. The metalwork has a mirror finish, it is kinetic and features a rotating sun-moon using a bolt that runs through the center, flanked by 8mm cabochon-cut natural gems. This special edition will only have 17 pieces, which mimic the number of pieces that the artist creates when producing graphical art. The bottle’s packaging design was designed in collaboration with Luis Sergio Rangel ¨Máscara¨ of the renowned Mucho Diseño studio, based in Torreón, Coahuila, Mexico.
Part of the profits from this purchase will be donated to the conservation of the Bolsón Tortoise, a species endemic to the Zona del Silencio.
